American Sign Language Interpreters

A sign language interpreter is a trained professional who facilitates communication between a person who uses American Sign Language (ASL) and a person who uses English. The requirements to become a sign language interpreter are demanding. In the state of Rhode Island, interpreters are required to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, must pass a national certification test or state-screening, and obtain a license from the Rhode Island Department of Health. Interpreters must also comply with a Code of Professional Conduct, which requires practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.
