Public Transportation

When using public transportation in Rhode Island, riders who are deaf or hard of hearing also rely on visual information. The ADA Standards for Transportation Facilities state, “Where public address systems convey audible information to the public, the same or equivalent information shall be provided in a visual format.”

The Rhode Island public transportation providers are encouraged to provide equally effective communications to the riders and travelers through captioning and visual text display boards to convey the audio information via public address system of transportation modes.

RICDHH stands ready to work with Rhode Island public transportation systems (airline, train, bus, ferry, etc.) to make all audible information accessible by providing the same information in a visual (text) format.
